Area student faces charges over threats

Corinthian C. Gilchrist.

MOULTON — A senior at R.A. Hubbard High School is in jail after he was accused of making threatening remarks during school Tuesday, officials said.

Corinthian Carnell Gilchrist, 18, of 94 Prospect St., Town Creek, is charged with making a terrorist threat, Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the threats were made during class.

Investigators said Gilchrist is accused of making comments indicating how he was going to harm other students and teachers at the school, which is located in North Courtland.

“He didn’t have any kind of weapon. He just stood up in class and said what he was going to do to students and teachers,” Mitchell said. “Whether he meant what he said or not, you just don’t do that anymore.”

Mitchell said school resource officers were notified and investigated the allegations before arresting Gilchrist at the school without incident.

Mitchell said no acts of violence were committed, “But the threat was taken as a credible danger.”

“In light of recent events, officers are not taking any comments to harm someone lightly,” Mitchell said, referring to the Friday shooting deaths of 20 6- and 7-year-old students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The shooter, Adam Lanza, 20, also shot to death six adults at the school and his mother before taking his own life. Flags across the country remain at half-mast as a symbol of national mourning. Funerals are ongoing for many of the children.

Johnny Yates, assistant superintendent for Lawrence County Schools, said Gilchrist has been suspended from school pending a disciplinary hearing.

Mitchell said Gilchrist was in the Lawrence County Jail without bail Wednesday.

Making a terrorist threat is a Class C felony and is punishable by one to 10 years in prison.
