A man involved in a high noon shoot-out today at Speed Z gas station on West Moulton Street returned after police arrived on scene and tried to pass himself off as a bystander, Decatur police said.
Demetrius Jaques Smith, 24, of 219 Sixth Ave. N.W., faces charges of discharging a firearm in the city limits and reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors. He was being held in Decatur City Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.
Detective Mike Burleson said Smith and another man exchanged several shots in the gas station parking lot.
No one was injured, but several other people, including two juveniles, were in the area at the time, Burleson said.
One of the bullets struck a storage building at Speed Z, police said.
A bullet hole found in the door of the nearby Church’s Chicken restaurant may have been from an earlier incident.
“That had been there for several months,” Church’s owner Murphy Brown said. “If somebody shot a bullet over there it would be very impressive if it went through the exact same spot.”
Police are looking for the other man believed to have been involved, Burleson said.
