Falcons win pair in Classic

Florenceā€™s Brandon Maxwell pitches against Lauderdale County in the TimesDaily Classic in Florence on Monday. Florence won 4-2. The Falcons also beat Rogers 4-3 in eight innings. Sheffield, Central and Mars Hill also won games in the tournament.

Florence picked up two victories on the opening day of the TimesDaily Classic baseball tournament, topping Lauderdale County 4-2 and Rogers 4-3 in eight innings.

Also winning on the first day of the tournament were Sheffield, Central and Mars Hill.

The tournament continues throughout the week with pool play at four sites, followed by bracket play next week.

Against Lauderdale County, Keeton Anderson had two hits, drove in a run and stole a base to spark the Falcons. Isaac Dillard had the only other hit for the Falcons.

Brandon Maxwell pitched five innings to get the win. He allowed two hits. James Hillhouse pitched the final inning for the save.

John Trousdale and Adam Berryhill had the only hits for Lauderdale County. Berryhill took the loss.

Against Rogers, Liles Hillhouse drove in Erroll Thompson with the winning run with a grounder in the eighth inning to lift the Falcons (2-0). Dillard had two hits and scored twice for Florence, while Anderson, Ethan Eck and Dominick Goodwin also had base hits. Auty Wilson pitched the final three innings to get the win.

Colin Chamblin pitched eight innings for Rogers. He struck out eight and allowed five hits.

Sheffield 13, Priceville 3: Eric Yarbrough collected three hits and Steven Roden had a base hit and two RBIs as Sheffield won its opener.

Simon Ridgeway earned the win, allowing one earned run on four hits in five innings while striking out six.

Sheffield scored four runs in the first inning and added seven in the second.

Central 10, Muscle Shoals 3: Murphy Harrison highlighted a three-hit day with a two-run inside-the-park home run as Central topped Muscle Shoals.

Harrison also had a single and a double, drove in three runs and scored three times. Zach Williams added two hits and three RBIs, while Andrew Mace had two hits in support of winning pitcher Caleb McDonald. Devin Balentine pitched three innings for the save.

Muscle Shoals had five players with one hit each.

Mars Hill 6, Priceville 5: Thomas May pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning to preserve a one-run Mars Hill victory over Priceville.

The Panthers led 6-1 going into the seventh inning, but Priceville scored four times to get within a run. May came on in relief to get the final three outs, including inducing a fly out to left field for the final out to strand the bases loaded.

JT Hudson and Logan Foote each had two hits for Mars Hill (1-0) while Colby Smith was the winning pitcher.

Regular season

Colbert County 12, Covenant Christian 0: Alex Aday and Jordan Bennett each had two hits, including a double as Colbert County downed Covenant Christian.

Nick Isbell pitched four innings to get the win.

Colbert County 15, Cherokee 2: Tyler Craft struck out 12 as Colbert County (2-0) dropped Cherokee.

John David Isbell, Aday and Craft had two hits each for the Indians.


Florence 7, Buckhorn 0 (girls): Katherine Rylant, Taylor Simpson and Devin McDonald each scored two goals as Florence won at Buckhorn. Caroline Young added one goal. Rachael Nowack and Abby Oliver played strong defensively for the Falcons.

Girls Basketball

Summertown 47, Collinwood 36: Lori Long and Megan Kilburn combined for 24 points to lead Summertown past Collinwood in the championship game of the District 12-A Tournament.

Long scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers while Kilburn scored 11. Morgan Long chipped in with nine points for Summertown (25-3).

Summertown outscored Collinwood (21-6) 14-6 to take a 23-14 halftime lead.

Hanna Littrell and Alexis Haddock led Collinwood with 10 points each.

The Trojans host Mount Pleasant on Thursday.
