HUNTSVILLE — Everette Mayes hadn’t done much offensively for most of four quarters.
He was just waiting for the right moment.
Mayes, without a basket until 57 seconds were left to play, sank a 3-pointer at that mark and later banked home the game-winning shot on a runner in the lane to lift Austin to a 59-57 victory over Grissom on Saturday in the consolation final of The Huntsville Times Classic.
“I’ve just got ice water in my veins,” Mayes said after the Black Bears took fifth place at Huntsville High.
He’ll get no argument from his coach.
“Last season we called him Big Shot Everette,” Austin’s Demond Garth said. “He wants the ball in his hands in the fourth quarter, and he made two big shots.”
Austin (9-3) advanced to the fifth-place game by defeating Bob Jones 62-50 in a game that began at 9 a.m. Saturday. Grissom advanced with a 53-43 win over Decatur in a 10:30 a.m. game. The final began at 1 p.m.
The semifinals were postponed from Friday night because of a leak in Huntsville’s auxiliary gym.
“We got better,” Garth said, “plus we overcame some adversity with the leaking gym and having to play this morning. Hopefully, this will carry us into area play.”
Austin held leads of 11-9 at the end of the first quarter and 32-23 at halftime. The score was 41-all entering the fourth.
Grissom pulled ahead at 57-54 with 1:11 to play, but Mayes tied it with his trey.
Austin’s defense got a stop, Mayes sank the game-winner with eight seconds left, and Malique Elliot got a steal as the Tigers neared the top of the key on the other end to seal the win.
“When we need a big basket I know I can get it,” Mayes said. “I never doubt myself in the clutch.”
Tobias Payne led Austin with 16 points. Camron Reedus added 15 points, and Elliot 12.
Devorice Milbry had 18 points for Grissom (10-9).
Austin 62, Bob Jones 50: Elliot had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the win. Mayes added 12 points.
Grissom 53, Decatur 43: Navante Williams scored a dozen points and Cameron Twitty and Kaleb Smith each added nine for the Red Raiders.
Williams was big on the boards with eight. Rex Jarman had a pair of assists and two steals.
Grissom, which led 26-17 at halftime, was led by Rob Daniels’ 20 points and Russ Daniels’ 16.
Milbry had seven rebounds.
