A Decatur couple welcomed their first children — three to be exact — this morning at Huntsville Hospital.

Doctor C. Lee McCain delivered the naturally conceived triplets to mother Katie Carter and father Kyle Williams about 7:15 a.m. Autumn (4 pounds), Bristol (5.5 pounds) and Carrington (5.7 pounds) were admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit at the Women and Children’s Hospital for evaluation and treatment until January, Williams said. All three girls were 18 inches long, he said.

Carter and Williams, who are engaged to be married, had a roughly 1 in 10,000 chance of having naturally conceived triplets, McCain said. Most triplets occur when the mother undergoes fertility treatments, he said.

More than 4 million American deliveries occur each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health. Of those births, about 7,000 are sets of triplets — 40 percent of which are aided by fertility treatments.
